Your stomach might be rumbling, but remember, the nutrients you choose to put into your body still matter. Although fast food traditionally gets a bad rap, it is possible to construct a healthy meal at your favorite fast food joint.

Today, Dr. John’s Big 5 focuses on how to make healthier choices the next time you stop for fast food.

Limit or avoid foods and drinks with added sugar.
Not only do foods with added sugar increase your calorie intake, they also have very little nutritional value for your body. Remember food is fuel, and you want to choose items that will keep your engine running smoothly. While at a fast food restaurant, start with small changes like eliminating soft drinks, sports drinks, fruit drinks and milkshakes. Even bypassing ketchup is one small step to reducing the amount of sugar you consume. Instead of fries with your meal, try a side salad, order fresh fruit or a plain baked potato as a healthier option.

Focus on grilled, baked or roasted lean meats.
Avoid fried and breaded items, such as crispy chicken sandwiches and breaded fish fillets. Choose turkey, chicken breast, lean ham or lean roast beef instead. Grilled, skinless chicken is usually your best bet. While eating fast food, look for meals under 500 calories. Grilled chicken sandwiches on whole grain buns are good options, but skip the mayo and sauces. Salads with grilled or lean meats are also a tasty alternative. Remember, skip the creamy dressings which can also be hiding sugars.

Choose water as your primary beverage.
Be aggressive to ensure you drink adequate amounts of water daily. Strive to drink a minimum of two liters a day. Water is vital for our bodies – the average adult is made up of over 70 percent water! Sticking with bottled water at a fast food restaurant eliminates extra calories often found in sugary drinks.
Choose fast food chains that allow you to customize your order.
It is easier to add extra veggies and eliminate condiments and fat when your food is prepared in front of you. Vegetables are higher in fiber and keep you full longer. This will decrease your need to snack in between meals or have spikes in your blood sugar levels. Remember to choose whole wheat bread whenever possible. It’s lower in calories and sodium and higher in fiber. Be sure to include healthy fats in your diet too. Avocado is the perfect special treat.

Moderation is always key.
One rule of thumb while eating fast food is to choose smaller meals. Avoid super-sized combo meals. It is better for our bodies to eat regular smaller meals rather than overeating one large meal high in fat and calories. Rather than eating three large fast food meals a day, opt to eat several healthy snacks like nuts, cheese and fruits and limit yourself to one fast food meal per day. In addition, an intermittent fast of 6 hours followed by one healthy fast food meal may also help maintain a diet and healthy weight.

If you have any questions or need advice, Dr. John’s Medical is here to help you with your healthcare needs. The Ketogenic Diet, or Keto, focuses on consuming good fats and reducing the carbs.

You’ll want to consume 75% fat, 20% protein and 5% carbs which will change the type of fuel your body uses from carbohydrates to ketones - converted from the good fats you eat! Keto can help you lose more weight than a low-fat diet and has many other health benefits, all while you don’t feel hungry. Some of the other benefits that Keto offers are improved cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels. It can help with certain types of cancer, Alzheimer’s, epilepsy, acne, Parkinson’s and polycystic ovary syndrome and even help with brain recovery after an injury (source: Medical News Today)!

Think Keto may be beneficial to you? You’ll want to avoid high carb foods like sugar, grains, rice, beans, potatoes, alcohol and most fruits and sauces (due to their sugar content) as well as unhealthy fats. Base the majority of your diet around foods like eggs & dairy, meat & fish, nuts & seeds, healthy oils like olive, avocado or coconut oils, avocados, and low-carb vegetables. It’s easy to make some of our main dishes into a Keto friendly meal by substituting Keto-friendly vegetables instead of the carbs or visiting our fresh salad bar! For breakfast, try an egg-based dish like our New California Omelet, perfectly stuffed with chicken, avocado, tomato, pepper jack cheese and topped with sour cream (Country Pride) or our New California Benedict - substituting a sausage patty for the English muffin or any of our customer favorite omelets (Iron Skillet). Stopping in for lunch or dinner? Order a burger with bacon and cheese! Order the Atlantic salmon or one of our Steaks grilled to your liking, paired with a side of cottage cheese or broccoli! These are just some tasty examples you could use at our restaurants, but what are some ideas you’ve tried or would like to? Remember, a Ketogenic diet is great, but not for everyone. If you are not currently doing the Keto diet, you may want to check first with your doctor or physician before starting.

Check out 16 foods to eat on a keto diet here.
2019 08:28:00 -0400 Restaurant StayFIT new diets health benefits Ketogenic Diet keto good fats reducing carbs carbs carbohydrates ketones lose more weight low-fat diet improved cholesterol blood pressure blood sugar levels cancer Alzheimer's epilepsy acne Parkinson's polycystic ovary syndrome brain recovery eggs dairy meat fish nuts seeds healthy oils olive avocado coconut low-carb vegetables keto friendly vegetables fresh salad bar omelet Country Pride Benedict Iron Skillet Restaurants Doctor Physician TAPetroRestaurant http://www.saibao5.icu/blog/pingback.axd http://www.saibao5.icu/blog/post.aspx?id=47a64784-69b4-487a-8648-425c7de3b708 0 http://www.saibao5.icu/blog/trackback.axd?id=47a64784-69b4-487a-8648-425c7de3b708 http://www.saibao5.icu/blog/post/keto-diet-plan#comment http://www.saibao5.icu/blog/syndication.axd?post=47a64784-69b4-487a-8648-425c7de3b708 The Fallen Soldier's Table

If you happen to find yourself at a Country Pride, Iron Skillet or another dining establishment within a TA, Petro or TA Express during a military holiday, you’ll likely see something unique – a small, fully set table, just waiting for its guest to return.

A Fallen Soldier’s Table, also known as a Missing Man Table or Fallen Comrade table, is the humble way we remember and honor the sacrifice of the men and women who gave their lives protecting our freedom.

The Fallen Soldier’s table has a few basic elements, but each display is completely unique. It starts with a small table set for one, symbolizing the isolation of the absent service member. Its seat is empty to bring attention to the missing guest. The table is usually set in the front of the restaurant, within sight of the entrance to the dining room.

A white tablecloth symbolizes the pure intentions of the service members, who have responded to our country’s call to arms. A single rose in a vase on top of the tablecloth reminds us of the blood that those service members have shed on our behalf. It also represents the family and friends left keeping the faith, awaiting the return of their loved ones.

You might find a slice of lemon or some salt sprinkled on a plate at the place setting. That represents the bitter fate of the missing and the tears shed by their families back at home. The glasses are inverted, to recognize that the missing and fallen cannot partake in this meal.

Sometimes there are head covers placed on the table, to represent the service of specific individuals. Other times restaurant staff will add a red ribbon to represent the love of country that inspires military members to serve our country every day. And of course, a lit candle symbolizes the light of hope that lives in all of our hearts, to help illuminate the way home for the missing and fallen.

The Country Pride restaurant in the TA located in Columbia, New Jersey was so moved by the Fallen Soldiers’ Table, that they now display it all year long. This is a tradition they’ve kept since the site was dedicated to Citizen Driver, Norman Knight, in 2014.

“Anyone who knows Norman knows he is very big into supporting our POW and MIA soldiers’ honor and loved ones. Norman even goes on bike rallies and helps raise money for POW” said Columbia Country Pride general manager, Hope Bianchi. “When we took our table down after Labor Day one year, Norman came to me and asked if I would put the table back up for Thanksgiving, because he was going to a rally, riding from upstate New York to the Jersey shore. He wanted to stop by our restaurant with the other veterans and show them our tribute.”

Whether you're stopping by our Country Pride in Columbia like Norman or you're at any other restaurant in the country, if you see a Fallen Soldier’s table, take a moment of silence for those service members that have lost their lives or may still be missing in action.
